Worshipping The Great Mammon

When Money Becomes a False Master in the House of God

Jesus clearly warned us:

“You cannot serve God and Mammon.”
— Matthew 6:24

Mammon is more than money — it represents a spirit that drives people to trust in wealth, chase materialism, and measure success by possessions rather than by obedience to God. Sadly, this spirit has found a seat even in the modern-day Church.

What Is Mammon?

Mammon is the personification of wealth as a god — a false master competing for the hearts of God’s people. In the Church, it often shows up when:

  • Success is measured by numbers and offerings, not by spiritual fruit
  • Ministers compromise truth for financial gain or popularity
  • People give to get — treating God like a business deal
  • The poor and needy are ignored in favor of status and comfort

The Danger of Serving Mammon

Worshipping Mammon blinds us to the righteous, holy, and sacrificial life of Christ. It turns worship into performance, giving into manipulation, and ministry into a marketplace.

“They have exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator.”
— Romans 1:25

When Mammon is worshipped, faith becomes shallow, love grows cold, and holiness is replaced by greed.

Christ: Our True Treasure

We believe the divine life of Christ in us leads not to selfish gain, but to selfless giving. Jesus gave up everything — not to make us wealthy, but to make us holy. He calls us to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness.

Let us not be a church that lives for gain, but one that lives to glorify Christ.
